Peak fitness was required when a group of trainees and their company directors tackled a mountainous feat to support mental health charities.

The fundraising group from Hitchin-based construction and fit-out company Willmott Dixon took on the Welsh Three Peaks challenge to support Herts Mind and Youth Talk, a St Albans-based charity for young people with mental health concerns.

Working as a team, the 14 hikers scaled Snowdon in the north of the country, Cadair Idris in mid-Wales, and Pen-Y-Fan in the south in just 14 hours, raising more than £5,000.

Daniel Wickenden, a management trainee, said: "Taking on the Welsh Three Peaks was not just a test of physical endurance, it was a journey of developing relationships and raising awareness of the great work that two local charities provide, while having some fun on the way."

The challenge includes a total walking distance of 17 miles and a combined ascent of 2,334 metres.

"The mountains threw many different challenges at us, with the weather being particularly bad on the second peak, but as a team we completed the walk together," added Daniel.

"I thoroughly enjoyed the day and believe that the generosity of our supply chain has made a resounding impact on the lives of teenagers and young adults residing in Hertfordshire.

"The funds we raised will directly contribute to providing confidential and free one-to-one counselling support for those in need."

The trainees and directors challenge is an annual event for Willmott Dixon and previous activities have included the national Three Peaks and the Yorkshire Three Peaks.

Chris Tredget, managing director, said: "This is a highlight of our calendar and gives the senior members of the company the opportunity to work directly as a team with the next generation where we are all on a level playing field. Everyone who takes part benefits in one way or another."
