STORM EUNICE: The worst winds to batter Hitchin in more than three decades have felled a large tree and left a telegraph pole in a dangerous position today, Friday (February 18).

Throughout the day, Hitchin Nub News has been reporting on strong winds hitting our town as deadly Storm Eunice blows in - with live updates available here

With gusts of nearly 80mph in and around our town, Nub News visited Willian Road in Hitchin earlier this afternoon, following reports a large beech tree had been blown down by the extreme storm that is currently rocking the country.

As you can see, our Nub News photographs underline the treacherous power of nature, with Storm Eunice forcing down the large 100-year-old tree in question - which crashed into Willian Road, near to Desborough Road in Hitchin.

Thankfully there were no injuries, however, the strong gusts also left a telegraph pole opposite the fallen tree in a dangerous position.

Alex Woodman, director of community protection and chief fire officer for Hitchin said: "We recommend people follow the guidance from the Met Office and take this weather warning seriously.

"Try to secure anything on your property such as trampolines and loose fence panels to prevent them blowing away and causing a hazard.

"Only travel if is really necessary and please put your safety first by staying at home where possible."

Willian Road is still currently closed with contractors attempting to make safe the tilting telegraph pole.

The advice from UK Power Networks when faced with such a situation is to stay away from power lines and report any damaged power lines immediately.
