Teddy from Knebworth House named Hertfordshire Museum Object of the Year 2026
By James Denselow 10th Mar 2026
A much-loved teddy bear discovered in the attic of Knebworth House has been crowned Hertfordshire Museum Object of the Year 2026 following a public vote.
The bear, known as "Teddy the Teddy," beat entries from museums across the county after attracting support from more than 4,500 voters.
The annual competition, organised by the Hertfordshire Association of Museums, showcases fascinating objects from museums and heritage organisations across the county, each telling a unique story about local history and people.
A childhood companion with a remarkable story
Teddy once belonged to Cameron Cobbold (1904–1987), who grew up at Knebworth House and later became Governor of the Bank of England and Lord Chamberlain to Queen Elizabeth II.
The well-worn bear – often seen wearing a scarf and dressing gown – was a treasured childhood companion before being carefully packed away among Cobbold's personal belongings after his death.
Archivists rediscovered Teddy in 2025 while exploring the attic at Knebworth House, where he had been stored for decades. After being checked by experts, the bear was placed on display in the Hampden Room, where visitors can now see him.
Public vote decides the winner
Museums across Hertfordshire entered objects ranging from historic artefacts to quirky curiosities, with the public invited to vote for their favourite.
Among the other entries were items such as historic documents, wartime artefacts and unusual museum pieces highlighting the county's rich heritage.
But it was Teddy's combination of charm and personal history that captured the imagination of voters, securing him the title for 2026.
Now proudly displayed at Knebworth House, the small bear with a big story continues to delight visitors – and now holds a county-wide award to prove it.
