Hitchin fine art gallery to close its doors due to rising business rates
By Katie Hall 10th Mar 2026
An independent Hitchin art gallery has announced it will close its town centre premises after a sharp rise in business rates.
Arkley Fine Art confirmed it will shut its gallery on Hermitage Road and move to operating exclusively online, citing a recent 40 per cent increase in business rates as making it too difficult to continue running a physical space.
Founded by Richard and Danielle Barry in 2017, the gallery has been a familiar presence on Hermitage Road for almost a decade, showcasing a mix of emerging and established artists.
In a statement, the gallery said the decision had been a difficult one.
"Arkley Fine Art has been our home, our business, and a place we have truly adored for the past eight and a half years," a spokesperson said.
"It has been one of the greatest chapters of our lives so far.
"But sometimes circumstances arise that are completely beyond your control and your head has to lead, even when your heart wishes otherwise."
The owners also thanked the Hitchin community for its support over the years.
"From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who has supported us and welcomed independent art into the town," the spokesperson added.
"We truly believe we have built — and continue to hold — one of the strongest portfolios of emerging and established talent. We will continue to bring you the freshest, most exciting artists the art world has to offer.
"Independent art is not going anywhere. We are not disappearing. We are adapting."
Arkley Fine Art will continue trading online. Readers can visit the gallery's website for more information.
