Three Worst Pothole Plagued Roads In Hitchin: Tell us your worst potholes in our town
Where is the worst pothole in Hitchin?
The condition of roads varies drastically across our town, with cash-strapped Herts County Council responsible for repairs on most roads outside the remit of National Highways, which bears responsibility for motorways and A roads.
Potholes - collapsed areas on tarmac - occur due to surface pressure from traffic and from bad weather - as you can see by our picture of a deep hole on Bedford Road near to Hitchin town centre.
They are a nuisance and can pose a threat to road users including motorists and cyclists.
Our question comes after recent surveys suggested the number of potholes filled in by councils across the country increased to nearly 1.7 million over the last 12 months - up 200,000 from 1.5 million in 2019-20.
The Asphalt Industry Alliance said the figures were equal to one pothole being fixed every 19 seconds, with the total amount spent by local authorities on filling in potholes in 2020-21 being £93.6m.
Where do YOU think is the biggest/most dangerous pothole in Hitchin? Let us know and we'll raise the issue with the council and see if we can get them to repair the offending area.
In the meantime here our our Hitchin Nub News Three Worst Pothole Plagued Roads In Hitchin:
3) Off A1 Junction 8 next to Corey's Mill roundabout and the A602
The road that takes you from the A1 northbound at junction 8 towards Corey's Mill roundabout and the A602 towards Hitchin is scandalously bad. Also hard to establish whether the road belongs under Highways England or Herts County Council jurisdiction. Either way, the holes are so deep and could lead to a serious accident with cars coming off the A1. Not to mention the damage the potholes could do to your car. Dangerous
2) Bedford Road
Take your pick regarding Bedford Road. Are the ugly craters outside Kwik Fit motors heading up to Top Field and Butts Close worse than the awful scarring on Bedford Road near Waitrose? The sheer awfulness of both scatterings of tarmac degradation should make the relevant authorities weep with shame. But they never do. Probably because no-one at the powers-that-be have to drive over them every single day. A disgrace.

1) Nightingale Road
The number of times we have seen cars swerve to avoid the laughably bad potholes in the middle of such a busy Hitchin thoroughfare is as dangerous as it is numerous, as motorist seek to avoid to pencil deep holes near to Wilshere Dacre School and Hitchin Boys' School. Shameful
