Walsworth Festival brings in record crowds
By James Denselow 18th May 2026
Thousands flocked to Walsworth Common on Sunday (17 May) as this year's Walsworth Festival enjoyed glorious sunshine, packed crowds and a full day of family entertainment.
The long-running community festival once again transformed the common into one of Hitchin's busiest weekend attractions, with visitors enjoying live music, food stalls, classic cars, fairground rides and a packed arena programme.
One of the standout attractions proved to be the Viking battle re-enactments, which drew large crowds throughout the day as warriors in full costume clashed swords and demonstrated historical combat techniques in the main arena. Viking groups had set up an encampment on the common and staged a series of lively demonstrations which proved especially popular with children and families.
Festivalgoers also enjoyed performances from local musicians organised by Todd in the Hole, alongside a busy selection of community and charity stalls, world food vendors and the popular classic car display.
With temperatures reaching the low twenties and clear skies throughout much of the afternoon, many residents described the event as one of the busiest Walsworth Festivals in recent years.
The festival, which dates back to the 1950s and has become a staple of the Hitchin calendar, is organised by local volunteers and supported through community fundraising and North Herts Council backing.
