✂️✨ Young Volunteer Connects with Resident Through Fashion‑Inspired Collage
There are many ways to get to know someone, but sometimes the most meaningful connections begin with scissors, glue, and a shared passion. That's exactly what happened today at Milford Lodge Care Home in Hitchin when young volunteer Charlotte Lumbis spent the morning creating a fashion‑themed collage with one of the residents — an activity that blossomed into a beautiful intergenerational friendship.
From the moment they sat down together, it was clear they were a perfect creative match. The resident, known in her younger years for her impeccable style and love of couture magazines, lit up as 18 year old volunteer Charlotte from North Herts College spread out a colourful selection of fashion clippings across the table.
👗 A Collage That Became a Conversation
As they worked side by side, the collage quickly became more than an art project.
• The resident shared stories of her favourite designers, the outfits she once wore herself, and the thrill of choosing the perfect ensemble for a night out.
• The volunteer listened with genuine interest, asking thoughtful questions and offering ideas for layout, colour, and composition.
• Together, they layered images of elegant silhouettes, bold prints, and timeless accessories, creating a piece that reflected not just style, but personality.
What began as a simple craft soon turned into a gentle exchange of memories, laughter, and mutual admiration.
💬 A Bond Beyond the Craft Table
By the time the collage was complete, the pair had discovered a natural rapport. The resident said she felt "young again" talking about fashion, while the volunteer shared how inspiring it was to hear firsthand stories from someone who had lived through so many iconic eras of style.
Staff watching from nearby couldn't help but smile — the room felt brighter, warmer, and full of that special spark that comes when generations meet in the middle.
💖 More Than a Masterpiece
The finished collage now hangs proudly outside the resident's room, a vibrant reminder of the afternoon they spent together. But the true masterpiece was the connection formed: a young person gaining wisdom and perspective, and a resident rediscovering the joy of being seen, heard, and celebrated for who they are.
It was a simple activity, but one that stitched together creativity, companionship, and the timeless language of fashion.
