January birthdays are officially the worst, according to new research – but Zizzi Hitchin is aiming to change that with the launch of its brand-new January Birthday Jackpot.

The Italian restaurant chain is rolling out the birthday boost across all 136 of its UK restaurants, guaranteeing a special treat for adults born in January – with one lucky diner at each restaurant set to scoop a £100 jackpot towards their table's bill.

Research commissioned by Zizzi found that more than a third of Brits (35.1%) believe January is the worst month to be born, with post-Christmas fatigue, tighter budgets and New Year's resolutions often putting a dampener on celebrations.

To fix that, Zizzi is promising January birthday guests a little extra sparkle. The first 100 January-born adults at each restaurant will receive a special birthday card revealing a surprise treat. Prizes include free starters, desserts, drinks, candy floss – and one golden envelope containing the £100 birthday jackpot.

Local diners celebrating in Hitchin could be in line for freebies such as Zizzi's popular Garlic and Mozzarella Bombe, a dessert on the house, or even the jackpot prize to help cover their bill.

To take part, January birthdays can book a table via the Zizzi website or through the Zillionaires' Club app, and request the January Birthday Jackpot in the special requests section when booking. Walk-in guests can also take part by showing valid photo ID proving their January birthday. The offer is available to guests aged 18 and over, while stocks last.
