League Two: Stevenage 3-1 Walsall Steve Evans Boro get back on track with vital victory
Steve Evans Stevenage steadied the ship after a spell of poor form as they eased past Walsall 3-1 at the Lamex on Saturday afternoon.
In an entertaining opening half, Boro took the lead after only seven minutes, through an emphatic strike by former Forest Green and Harrogate striker Josh March, who grabbed his first goal for the club after arriving at Broadhall Way in January.
Stevenage doubled the lead on 14 minutes when Luke Norris - who spent the match engaged in a lively duel with the Saddlers giant centre=back Manny Monthe - slotted home from close range. Kane Smith provided the assist after good work down the line to square for the bustling Boro No9.
Walsall pulled a goal back just before the half hour mark to make the scoreline 2-1, when leviathan defender Monthe forced the ball home after ponderous defending by the Boro backline.
However, with Evans men badly requiring a victory following a poor spell of form, the impressive 25-year-old March grabbed with second of the match with a quite stunning overhead kick to make it 3-1. The goal surely being a strong contender for goal of the day after Norris teed up his fellow attacker.
Walsall's former Newport boss Mike Flynn made four changes at the interval, to indicate his displeasure at Walsall's performance, but in truth Stevenage were simply the better team.
The victory moves them into second spot, allowing nervous Boro fans to enjoy their Saturday night once more, a feeling they haven't had over the last few weeks.
Crewe are next at the Lamex this Tuesday, the first of 12 'cup finals' to go for Evans men in their bid to gain automatic promotion from League Two.
