Stevenage drew 0-0 with Colchester on Tuesday evening and remain out of the League Two relegation places.
Colchester nearly went in front in a hard-fought game at the Lamex after a 12th-minute shot from Kwame Poku flew narrowly over the bar.
The visitors could have gone ahead shortly afterwards when Tommy Smith headed wide when well-laced following a free-kick from former Arsenal academy defender Cohen Bramall.
Boro's former Colchester striker Luke Norris aimed a low drive at U's keeper Dean Gerken, who also saved well from at his near post from Elliott List after the interval.
Alex Revell's came even closer to breaking the deadlock when List picked up Norris' short pass, to drive at the colchester backline before thudding the post with a low shot.
There was time for former QPR loanee Aramide Oteh to make an appearance as a late substitute but as the clock ticked down Jamie Cumming saved from Noah Chilvers to ensure the points were shared.
The north Herts side remain in 22nd place, a point ahead of Grimsby Town, who they play in a crucial relegation six-pointer on Saturday.
