Steve Evans Stevenage lost 2-0 at Mansfield on Tuesday evening with the promotion-chasing Stags remaining in contention for automatic berth.

George Lapslie and Matty Longstaff scored to leave Mansfield in fifth place, a single point behind third-placed Northampton with only two games to go.

Former Mansfield boss Evans - who has guided Boro to League Two safety - was given a hostile reception by home fans on his return to his former club.

But his Stevenage side defended resolutely in the opening 45 minutes at Field Mill.

However, the home side went ahead in the 51st minute when Jamie Murphy's short corner saw Lapslie fire home from close range to make it 1-0.

Evans Boro ended the match with 10 men after using all their substitutes prior to losing Terence Vancooten, who went off injured eight minutes before the end.

Mansfield capitalised on the missing man, with Longstaff making the points safe in the third added minute to seal victory.

Stevenage make the long trip to Carlisle on Saturday, before ending their season on Saturday, May 7 at home to Salford.
