Best dog-friendly walks in and around Hitchin and North Herts to kick-start 2026

Dog owners across Hitchin and North Hertfordshire are being encouraged to pull on their walking boots and enjoy the great outdoors as the New Year begins.
North Herts Council is highlighting some of the area's best walking routes as January gets underway – a month nationally recognised as a time to get more active and also marking National Walk Your Dog Month.
With rolling countryside, historic villages and well-loved nature reserves right on Hitchin's doorstep, the council says there has never been a better time to make walking part of a New Year routine – whether for health, wellbeing or simply enjoying fresh air with four-legged friends.
Top dog-friendly walks near Hitchin and North Herts
Baldock Circular and Ivel Springs Local Nature Reserve
A gentle, family-friendly loop through farmland and village paths around Baldock, ideal for a relaxed countryside stroll.
Knocking Hoe National Nature Reserve and Lodgefield Plantation Loop
Set near Pegsdon and Pirton, this route offers sweeping chalk grassland views and rare wildflowers, making it a peaceful escape into nature.
Clothall and Wallington Circular
A scenic walk taking in historic villages and rolling fields, showcasing the best of rural Hertfordshire.
St Paul's Walden and Hitch Wood Walk
A moderate route through parkland and woodland, with Hitch Wood's famous spring bluebells providing a spectacular seasonal highlight.
Aspenden, Cottered Warren and Wakeley Circuit
A longer walk for more experienced walkers, featuring varied landscapes and glimpses of local heritage.
Letchworth Greenway
A 20.5km (12.7-mile) circular route around Letchworth Garden City, clearly waymarked and ideal for a full-day walk. Walkers are advised to pack refreshments or detour into the town for food and drink.

Cllr Amy Allen, Executive Member for Environment at North Herts Council, said: "These walking routes showcase the best of North Herts – our rolling hills, vibrant woodlands, and diverse natural habitats. We want to inspire everyone to get out and enjoy the health and wellbeing benefits of connecting with our local landscape."
How to get started
- Choose your route: Maps and GPX files are available via Hertfordshire County Council's walking and cycling pages.
- Prepare properly: Wear sturdy footwear, check the forecast and bring water.
- Respect nature: Stick to paths and follow the countryside code – especially when walking dogs.
Prefer an organised walk?
Residents can also join Hertfordshire Health Walks, which offers 17 free weekly walks across North Hertfordshire. Walks are graded from gentle "First Steps" to more brisk options, making them suitable for all abilities
Find local greenspaces easily
The North Herts Council app also includes a 'Find My Nearest' feature, helping residents locate nearby parks and greenspaces. The app is available to download on both Apple and Android devices.
With so many routes close to Hitchin, residents are being encouraged to step outside, explore locally and start 2026 with spring in their step – and a happy dog by their side. 🐾
