We've all seen the evocative sepia-tinted photographs that line the tunnel between north and south platforms at Hitchin railway station.

But now, you can learn more about the stories behind the pictures and iconic murals that adorn the walls on the way to trains taking us to London.

The brilliant North Herts Museum has opened a must-visit new exhibition called A Commute Through Time: History in the Station Underpass.

The site on Brand Street said: "Rail commuters will be familiar with the photo mural panels from Hitchin Railway Station's underpass.

"In early 2021 staff at North Hertfordshire Museum were contacted by Groundwork East who were looking to decorate the underpass at the station.

"We decided that our large photograph collection was a perfect collection to use in the space.

"Working with Groundwork East and Govia Thameslink Railway we refined our plans to create the final station display."

Nub News took a wander along the tunnel recently as you can see by our gallery - so why not visit the exhibition that brings seven of these panels out of the underpass and into Hitchin's outstanding museum for a far less hurried look.

The exhibition runs until February 20 in the Arches at North Herts Museum.
