Council set to rule out development of St Mary Car Park

North Herts District Council's is scheduled to debate "Churchgate viability and next steps" this coming Thursday (10th July)
A report to accompany the meeting presents a feasibility study to the site based on a balance of "residential (private & affordable), market (indoor & outdoor space), car parking, community & leisure space, retail (inclusive of independent) and the possibility of a food store".
For those looking ahead to what the redevelopment will look like the report is clear that "the presence of a food store will improve the financial viability of all options".
Rumours of Lidl coming to Hitchin have been around for years.
The report also proposes avoiding redeveloping St Mary's car park - highlighting a desire to protect "the heritage of St. Mary's Church".
To reach the target of 40% of affordable housing the scheme "might need to be subsidised by the Council" and/or require some "compromises".
Full Council will be asked to agree an additional £120,000 needed to fund consultancy costs for the next period of work
