Skaters, BMX riders, scooter users and families gathered last Friday (29 May) to celebrate the official opening of Hitchin's revamped King George V Skatepark following a major redevelopment that has transformed the ageing facility into one of the largest skateparks in the region.

The new skatepark replaced the former steel-ramp facility with a modern smooth concrete design shaped by extensive consultation with local skaters, BMX riders, scooter users and residents during 2023 and 2024.

Delivered by North Herts Council in partnership with Groundwork East and specialist skatepark designers Canvas Spaces, the project saw construction begin in July and completed in just 14 weeks, creating a significantly larger and more inclusive space for riders of all abilities.

The finished skatepark features three distinct zones, allowing multiple users to ride simultaneously. Facilities include a standalone mini-ramp aimed at helping beginners build confidence, a street section packed with technical features, and a large L-shaped bowl with an eight-foot extension that has been described as "one of the largest in the region".

Designed to cater for everyone from first-time riders to experienced skaters looking to develop advanced skills, the site also includes viewing areas for spectators and a memorial to local skater Ben Patane.

The free community launch event ran from 10am to 4pm and featured coaching sessions, competitions for skateboarders, BMX riders and scooter users, alongside demonstrations from professional riders and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Speaking previously about the project, North Herts Council's Executive Member for Environment, Cllr Amy Allen, said the facility had been designed for people whether they were "just starting out" or already had "serious tricks up your sleeve".

The redevelopment followed feedback from local users who wanted a more modern and versatile facility than the old steel skatepark could provide.

With its combination of beginner-friendly areas and challenging features, supporters hope the new skatepark will become a hub for action sports across Hertfordshire for years to come.

And who knows – maybe the next Tony Hawk will start their journey in Hitchin.
