Shuttleworth's Wings & Wheels Air Show delivers a soaring day out for Hitchin families
By James Denselow 3rd Jun 2026
Just a 20-minute drive from Hitchin, the latest Wings & Wheels Air Show at Shuttleworth proved once again why it remains one of the region's most popular family events.
The second air show of Shuttleworth's 2026 season - held on the last weekend of May - combined classic aviation with vintage vehicles, family entertainment and the unique atmosphere of one of Britain's most picturesque airfields.
Blessed with warm temperatures and clear skies, visitors were able to make the most of a packed programme that offered far more than just aircraft displays.
Alongside the impressive flying action, families enjoyed climbing walls, ball pits, BMX bike demonstrations, mini pedal planes, live music and opportunities to explore the venue's extensive collection of historic vehicles and aircraft.
The event also featured aviation-themed exhibits from model clubs, glider experiences and a host of traders and food stalls, creating a festival atmosphere throughout the day.
One of the highlights was the expert commentary broadcast around the airfield, helping visitors understand the history and significance of the aircraft taking to the skies. From helicopters to vintage warbirds, there was plenty to keep aviation enthusiasts entertained.
The flying programme built towards a memorable finale, with many spectators staying until the final hour of displays. A particular crowd-pleaser came at 4pm when the unmistakable sight and sound of a Spitfire took to the air, drawing cameras and applause from across the site.
Away from the runway, visitors could take a quieter moment to enjoy picnics in the beautiful Swiss Garden, where peacocks wandered freely among the historic landscaped grounds.
With its mix of aviation heritage, family activities and relaxed countryside setting, Wings & Wheels offered something for all ages. Whether visitors came for the aircraft, the classic cars or simply a family day out in the sunshine, Shuttleworth once again delivered an event well worth the short trip from Hitchin.
The air show also provided a preview of what's to come later this season, with Shuttleworth's newly themed 2026 programme set to feature attractions including a Spitfire and Strikemaster formation display, the return of aerobatic favourite Rich Goodwin's Jet Pitts and celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the de Havilland Chipmunk aircraft.
