Full house at Hitchin's St Mary's Church for our town's Civic Service on Remembrance Sunday
Hitchin: St Mary's Church held a Parish Civic Service for Remembrance Sunday this weekend, with the largest number of uniform groups able to attend since 2019 and filling the church to capacity.
Local Scouts, Guides, Explorers, RAF and Army Cadet forces from Hitchin attended with their district leaders. Senior RAF officers from the area, local dignitaries and Hitchin MP, Bim Afolami took part in the service.
St Mary's curate, Rev'd Katy Little led the service, telling Nub News: "As someone new to Hitchin it was wonderful to be involved in such a poignant service that brought together so many different organisations and people from Hitchin and the surrounding areas.
"It is so important for us all to pause, reflect, give thanks and remember all those who have given so much."
The Deputy Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, Dr Helen Hanbury, along with all the other groups also laid wreaths at the War Memorial in the Churchyard, after marking the two minutes' silence at 11 am, with a large crowd of townsfolk looking on.
Rev'd Christopher Bunce, Vicar of St Mary's, gave a Sermon reflecting not just on the losses and legacy of two World Wars, but on the recent conflict in Ukraine and hopes for peace. .
St Mary's Hitchin Nub News weekend column list A Churchwarden Writes told us: "The church was prepared for the occasion this year not just with wreaths, but with a stunning display of poppies around the font and an installation which appeared to make flowers flow down from the roof of the nave. This is in place until Tuesday."
The church is open 930 am until 430 pm daily.
