Residents living with dementia were treated to a truly special experience this week when residents from Milford Lodge in Hitchin went to Church Farm Ardley for an afternoon of bottle‑feeding, cuddles, and calm connection.

The afternoon was filled with soft bleats and warm smiles as the lambs trotted in, their tiny hooves tapping gently across the floor. Residents' faces lit up instantly, many reaching out with open hands as the animals nuzzled curiously into their laps. Activity Organiser Devina Kutowaroo said "For individuals living with dementia, these sensory moments — the warmth of soft wool, the rhythmic motion of feeding, the gentle sounds — can be deeply grounding and comforting."

Staff prepared bottles of warm milk, and with support, residents took turns feeding the lambs. The simple act sparked joy and confidence, with some residents laughing as the lambs eagerly guzzled their milk, tails wagging with enthusiasm. Others held the bottles quietly, enjoying the peaceful closeness and the soothing presence of the animals.

The visit also stirred memories. Several residents shared stories of childhood farms, springtime chores, and animals they once cared for. These recollections flowed naturally, creating moments of connection not only with the lambs but with one another.

Team members described the atmosphere as "beautifully calm," noting how the interaction encouraged relaxation, reduced anxiety, and brought a sense of purpose to the afternoon. For many residents, especially those who respond strongly to tactile experiences, the visit offered a rare and meaningful opportunity to engage in a familiar, nurturing activity.

As one resident said with a smile, "I haven't fed a lamb in years — it feels lovely to do it again."

Activity Organiser Devina Kutowaroo went on to say "The lambs' visit was more than just a charming seasonal treat. It was a reminder of how powerful animal‑assisted moments can be in bringing comfort, connection, and joy to those living with dementia."
