Herts Police have arrested a man and a woman after weapons were brandished on Hitchin streets, that led to armed units being deployed.

Officers on the ground and in the air conducted an extensive search led by a force helicopter along with at least five squad cars and two police vans on Monday evening.

Police were called shortly after 515pm on Monday (March 27) following an incident in Redhill Road, Hitchin.

It was reported that attempts were made to force entry to an address before two males made off from the area on e-bikes.

Officers attended to establish the circumstances around what had happened.

A short while later, a member of the public then reported that an altercation had then occurred in the Wellingham Avenue area, between two males on e-bikes and three people who were reportedly in possession of weapons. The group then fled.

A search was carried out by officers, with assistance from the police helicopter and a vehicle of interest was traced to Browning Drive.

Officers used stop and search powers and located suspected drugs and weapons.

A man and woman were subsequently arrested and remain in police custody at this time.

Police told Nub News: "No one was hurt during the incident. The two males on e-bikes remain outstanding.

"Enquiries are continuing at this time, but the incidents are being treated as linked and the persons involved are suspected to be known to each other.

"Investigating officers would like to hear from anyone who may have information to assist enquiries. "

DI Ben Smith from North Herts Local Crime Unit is particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have information or CCTV capturing two males using electric bikes in the Westmill area last night.

The crime ref is 41/25091/23.

Herts Police would not comment on whether this incident was gang related/postcode gang/related.
