Hitchin town centre fell silent on Remembrance Sunday to honour the courage and sacrifice of those who served their country.

A large crowd gathered at the cenotaph near to St Mary's Church to pay tribute to the fallen during the Act of Remembrance.

St Mary's Church held a civic service that commenced at 10am and was followed by wreath laying at 11am for the Act of Remembrance by the War Memorial.

Hitchin resident Danny Pearson attended the event and told Nub News: "It was an extremely well attended service and the church was beautifully decked out in poppy floral tributes.

"There was also a new addition this year inside the church in the form of a beautiful cascading wall of poppies from the church roof, just in front of where the choir sings. The people who were able to attended the service then made the short journey over to the war memorial.

"The service gave people a chance to step away from their busy lives to reflect on those who have gone before us."

Wreaths were then laid at the War Memorial and the Last Post sounded across the people gathered and the nearby town centre.
