Hitchin MP Bim Afolami has chosen his preferred candidate in the Tory leadership battle.

Our town's Parliamentarian has chosen to support former chancellor Rishi Sunak in the race to become leader of the Conservative party in the aftermath of Boris Johnson's resignation.

Mr Afolami - who resigned as vice chair of the party live on air during an interview with a cable channel last week - tweeted his support of Mr Sunak.

He said: "Rishi is decent, principled, experienced and capable.

"He can take us through these troubled economic times, has the vision to inspire the next generation and can appeal to all parts of the country. North and South, traditional and new supporters, young and old - he should be our next Prime Minister."

Mr Afolami had previously supported Johnson as leader through the Partygate scandal and the subsequent Sue Gray report.
