How social media reacted to Hitchin MP Bim Afolami's support for Boris Johnson in confidence vote

As Hitchin Nub News reported last night, Hitchin MP Bim Afolami belatedly announced his support for Boris Johnson in a tweet that saw nearly 3,000 people interact with his post.

In the confidence vote on Monday evening (June 6), the PM won the ballot among Conservative MPs, including Mr Afolami.

With 359 ballots cast among Conservative MPs including our town's MP, 211 Tory MPs came out in favour of Johnson, with 148 registering no confidence in their leader. A majority of 63 - meaning 41 per cent of Tory MPs have no confidence in Johnson.

Social media reacted in large numbers to Mr Afolami's stance - revealed in a terse tweet from his official account moments before the vote.

Here's a selection of what some said on the social media platform Twitter - in a mix of fury, indignation, sardonic humour and derision.

(While it was difficult to find anyone on social media that agreed with Mr Afolami's decision, please do remember when interacting with anyone on social media - including politicians - to keep personal abuse out of the conversation.)
