Hitchin MP launches local pothole campaign following “major funding boost”
Alistair Strathern, the MP for the Hitchin constituency, has called for residents to share views on the worst potholes and poorly maintained roads across the constituency as part of his campaign to improve local road conditions.
Following campaigning in Parliament from Mr Strathern and fellow MPs on the state of roads across the country, in October's Budget the Government announced an extra £500m for pothole works, to bring the fund for 2025/26 to £1.6bn.
Locally, this includes an extra £11m for Central Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.
Strathern is seeking residents feedback on which roads and potholes they would like to be prioritised.
Since becoming an MP he has been pushing councils to fix the worst roads, and will be feeding back the results of his survey to the leadership of CBC and Hertfordshire county councils.
Constituents can fill in Strathern's survey, here.
The funding increase is expected to facilitate the fixing of seven million potholes across the country, saving families hundreds, if not thousands in avoided repair costs.
Strathern has long been campaigning on potholes locally, with nearly 500 residents signing his recent letter to Central Bedfordshire Council calling on them to patch Old Bridge Way, Shefford.
Alistair Strathern MP said: "The poor state of many local roads isn't just an embarrassment, it's a real danger for those who use them".
"Having been regularly raising this issue in Parliament, I was delighted to see the Government deliver an extra £500m for road repairs, £11m of which I've secured for our local councils".
"I need your help to ensure we make the most of it though. Share your views on the worst potholes and roads locally with my team, so we can push CBC and Herts County Council to act".
"Together, lets call time on the dire state of local roads and get them back to a condition we can all be proud of"
