Hitchin pays respects to our late monarch Queen Elizabeth II by laying flowers at Market Place flagpole
In a move reminiscent of people's reaction to the death of Lady Diana a quarter of a century ago, many in Hitchin have started laying flowers as a sign of respect for the passing of Her Majesty.
Queen Elizabeth II died peacefully aged 96 on Thursday afternoon at the Balmoral estate in Scotland, where she had been staying over the summer.
She became, through the course of her long reign, not only the oldest sovereign in the country's history but also its longest serving, serving the country through unstinting loyalty, duty and acclaimed perseverance.
King Charles III, who became the new monarch immediately, is expected to address the nation today, Friday (September 9).
St Mary's Churchwarden, who pens a regular weekend column for Nub News told us: "In 1997, people queued out the door of St Mary's to pay their respects to the late Princes Diana. People have been visiting us over the last 24 hours to pay their respects after the passing of the Queen.
"There is also provision to lay flowers in the market square, next to the flagpole."
As you can see by our Nub News photographs, there are already a number of flowers that have been laid to honour Queen Elizabeth II. If you would like to lay a bouquet of your own you are welcomed to do so.
The sign next to the flagpole, which has the Union Jack flying at half mast, reads: 'Area for floral tributes in Remembrance of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II."
