Police are appealing for witnesses and information as part of ongoing enquiries into an incident in Hitchin, during which a woman was bitten by a dog and another dog had to be put to sleep.

The incident occurred in Purwell Lane, at around 10pm on Friday, October 25.

It was reported that a woman aged in her 40s was out walking her Tibetan terrier when another dog ran over and began to attack it. As she tried to intervene, the woman was bitten on her finger and sustained bruising to her eye.

A tall, white man, of slim build came over and took the offending dog - described as a large breed with dark fur - before running off.

The victim's dog sustained major injuries and sadly had to be put to sleep.

PC Manuela Ungureanu, who is investigating, said: "Understandably the victim is distraught at the sad loss of her beloved dog.

"Our enquiries are continuing at this time to trace the owner of the second dog and we are asking anyone who thinks they may be able to assist us to please come forward.

"Have you seen anyone in the area matching the same description? Do you recall seeing them in the area on the night of the incident? Any information at all could greatly assist our enquiries."
