Hitchin Pride bench set on fire

The leader of North Herts Council described the fire as a "deliberate targeted attack" that was "not representative of Hitchin". He also pledged to have the bench "rebuilt and looking beautiful again".
North Herts Pride put out a statement today following the incident saying that - "we are devastated and deeply saddened to learn that the North Herts Pride bench on Windmill Hill was set on fire last night".
"This bench was more than just a seat—it was a vibrant symbol of love, inclusivity, and unity. Painted in the colours of the Pride flag, it stood as a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community in our area, a reminder that everyone belongs and has a right to feel safe, seen, and valued"
"Acts like this are not just vandalism—they are attacks on visibility, acceptance, and progress. It is heartbreaking that someone chose to destroy something that brought hope and representation to so many".
"But we will not be silenced. We will not be erased".
"North Herts Pride is more determined than ever to continue our mission to celebrate and support the LGBTQ+ community. We will rebuild, we will repaint, and we will come back stronger—because love will always outshine hate"'
"To our community: we see you, we stand with you, and we will never stop fighting for you"
"If anyone has information about this incident, we urge you to please let us know".
