Children campaign for safer streets after speeding cars outside school
Children, teachers and families from a Hitchin primary school are campaigning for a new zebra crossing and reduced speed limit on Old Hale Way Road
Children and teachers from Our Lady Catholic Primary School, Hitchin, are campaigning to boost safety just outside their school gates. The petition has been launched after families face speeding traffic during drop-off and pick-up on a regular basis.
Sarah Snowball, Headteacher of Our Lady Catholic Primary School, said: "The speeding traffic outside of our school presents a serious risk, it's only a matter of time until someone is hurt by speeding traffic.
"We're pleased to have the support of local Councillors to drive forward safety on the doorstep of our community school – it has been fantastic to see support from people living in the area.
"It has been wonderful to see our young people getting involved in campaigning and learning about how to make a positive change for their local area."
The school has teamed up with three dedicated local councillors – Cllr Ian Albert, Cllr Val Bryant and Cllr Dave Winstanley - to petition for increased road safety measures including the installation of a zebra crossing on Old Hale Way Road outside the school and lowering the speed limit to 20mph.
The petition is open until Monday, April 8 and is available here: https://democracy.hertfordshire.gov.uk/mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?id=1179
