Hitchin Town FC have reacted to the news that the government's sports minister says fans can return to grounds at Step 3 and below.

The decision means non-elite sports are able to admit some spectators with social distancing measures in place - and while leagues and clubs are seeking clarity, the Canaries say the move is a vital step in the right direction.

Sports minister Nigel Huddleston says the government have firmed up guidance to allow 'some fans' back into non-League grounds from Steps 3 and below.

"We are pleased to have this decision made so we are closer to welcoming fans back to Top Field," the Canaries told Hitchin Nub News, adding: "Without them we cannot survive financially.

"At the start it will be necessary to have restrictions to ensure everybody's safety and social distancing, and we have had to make tough decisions to ensure we are able to do this.

"As time goes on, and with the co-operation and understanding of all, we hope to be able to relax some or all of the restrictions. But it's a start!"
