Hitchin could experience temperatures of 30C this week.

A September heatwave is set to bring a spell of warmer weather to north Herts and around the country.

The Met Office has said the next few days will be exceptionally warm for this time of year, well above the average.

The nation's forecaster said: "Tuesday we're still looking at highs of 30 somewhere in the south-east maybe even a spot of 31.

"There could be highs of 27 or 28 again on Wednesday, but as we head towards the end of the week the heat will begin to move away and temperatures will drop to the low 20s in the warmest parts."

The hot weather arrives as the 'rule of six' comes into place in an attempt to prevent Covid cases rising dramatically.

From today, Monday, it will be against the law to gather in groups of six or more with the police having powers to fine, disperse or arrest people who break the law.

The new laws mean large groups gathering in parks and open air spaces such as Windmill Hill, Bancroft or Butts Close will be barred from meeting to enjoy the sun together.
