Former Hitchin schoolgirl Molly-Mae Hague has apologised after her latest 'Thatcherite' comments have caused a backlash against the social media influencer from our town.

The former Priory School pupil insisted she would 'never intend to hurt or upset anyone' after the controversy caused by her comments that 'we all have the same 24 hours in a day.'

The comments have been likened by many to former Conservative leader Margaret Thatcher, accusing the Hitchinite of not fully understanding class divides and poverty.

Molly-Mae, who once revealed to this reporter she knew she would appear on Love Island while working as lifeguard at Hitchin Swimming Centre has spoken out to defend herself in the wake of her latest social media storm.

Molly-Mae, who has 6.2m followers on her Instagram page, appeared on series five of Love Island, and went on to finish second with boyfriend, Tommy Fury, who is the half-brother of heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury, has once again been in the headline.

However, the 22-year-old social media influencer from Hitchin, who now lives in Manchester with Tommy, insisted she would never post a malicious message.

She went to apologise to "people that have been affected negatively [or] misunderstood" what she says.

Molly-Mae, the CEO of young fashion label Pretty Little Things online featured on The Diary Of A CEO podcast, hosted by Dragons' Den's Steven Bartlett.

In the video Molly-Mae says: "You're given one life and it's down to you what you do with it. You can literally go in any direction.

"When I've spoken about that in the past, I have been slammed a little bit, with people saying: 'It's easy for you to say that, you've not grown up in poverty, you've not grown up with major money struggles, so for you to sit there and say that we all have the same 24 hours in a day, it's not correct.' But technically what I'm saying is correct. We do."
