Hugo loves the ritual of getting his weekly Beano from Yatin's "Good News" on Hermitage Road every Wednesday.
He first became interested in the Beano when he saw his Dad's Dennis the Menace Fan Club membership from 1983.
His joke – "what's the difference between a tent and a Granny? One's a tepee, the other pees tea" was part of the weekly print run of some 60,000 copies of the comic being enjoyed in households up and down the UK.
Hugo's Dad Craig explained to Hitchin Nub News that "he comes from a long line of Menaces and heard he had a wonderfully kind Great Great Uncle from Madeira (Carlos) - who came to Scotland in the 1950s and learned to read and write English using the Beano, Dandy, 'Oor Wullie and the Broons. Even when he was fluent, he would still use words like 'Cripes!' or 'Jings!'
"The Beano has been a wonderful addition to Hugo's reading. After his schoolbook and just before bedtime he'll want to read a few colourful stories. The Bash Street Kids, Dennis and Gnasher or Minnie are usually 'getting one over' on the grown-ups with a bit of cheeky mischief. It's added even more fun to his reading experience and means he can read for pleasure".
To celebrate making the national comic, Hugo was presented with a signed copy of the edition at "Good News" by Danny Pearson, a local Hitchin legend himself as well as a writer for the Beano.
Danny said that "it was wonderful to meet Hugo, his dad, and his sister at Good News. I was especially proud to see that my fellow Beano Club member dressed to impress in his black and red striped T-shirt. Very on brand. I have said many times before that Hitchin has helped to create so many of the scripts that I have written for the Beano over the years. Hitchin is Beanotown! I love that Hugo, and his family make the weekly trip to our friends at Good News on Hermitage Road to pick up their copy of the Beano. We have so many comic fans in town, and it was fantastic to see a good supply of Beano Christmas specials sitting, waiting to be picked up by local Beano fans. Hugo's joke was very brilliant… and very cheeky. It's so uplifting to see a magnificent young creative starting on this fun filled journey into the world of comics!"
