Leamington 4-0 Hitchin

The defining moment of this game came after 30 minutes when the referee awarded Hitchin a penalty. At the time it was unclear what led to the decision but it was confirmed to be for handball. Hitchin's regular penalty taker Taylor Rhines was on the bench so responsibility fell to Diogo Freitas-Gouveia. Unfortunately his penalty was comfortably saved by Brian Okinkwo. To make matters worse just three minutes later Leamington took the lead. Nathan Kabeya delivered an excellent cross to the far post that Kai Tonge headed home.
Hitchin made one change from Tuesday with Owen Brooks replacing Rhiney and they made a bright start. Callum Nicolson had an early shot before Sean Duodu went on a good run but saw his shot blocked and then just failed to get on the end of a clever pass from Ciaren Jones. Charlie Briggs headed goalwards from a Nicolson free kick to produce a good save from Okonkwo with Duodu blasting the loose ball over the bar from close range. If anything Hitchin had been the better team but the missed penalty did seem to affect their confidence and the sucker punch of Leamington scoring so soon after lifted their game. Diogo had a shot saved by Okonkwo before Tonge came close for Leamington.
So an even first half saw Hitchin trailing and there was more bad news as Jones had to be replaced after injuring his ankle and Blue Joy came on for the second half. The second goal would be crucial and Leamington got it after 53 minutes. It was a good strike from Nathan Kabaya that took a defection over Tyler McGregor's head. From this point Hitchin never threatened to get back in to the game. Substitute Owen Farmer added a third goal after a good cross but there were strong suspicions of offside. That was after 65 minutes and Lloyd Asamoah then shot wide while Kav Cotter had a couple of attempts.
All the subs were used but in all honesty a goal did not really look like coming. There were 10 additional minutes and in the fourth of these Kyle Finn scored from close range to complete Hitchin's misery. So a promising start ended with a comprehensive defeat and again there is a lack of consistency in the performances. On Tuesday it was a real team performance with high energy levels but while Leamington were no better than Leighton too many players failed to reproduce Tuesday's performance levels. Also the lack of goals is becoming a concern with only seven scored in the ten games played.
