Intensive care patients in Hertfordshire could soon visit a new sun terrace to aid their recovery.

East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust has planning permission for a new outdoor space at Lister Hospital, Stevenage.

The proposed development would sit on level four of the tower building, located towards the centre of the hospital and accessed via a ramp.

Two terrace bays will be able to accommodate a patient bed and two guest seats each.

"The introduction of a sun terrace to the intensive treatment unit will enable patients to have an elevated level of care," the trust's design and access statement reads.

"Exposure to natural light, fresh air and nature is encouraged to aid recovery of the patients.

"The new ITU terrace has been developed to maximise each of these features.

"It is thought the new terrace will improve patient recovery time and overall hospital experience."

It adds the 126 square metre development would feature planters to provide "privacy and dignity to those seeking fresh air but without limiting the amount of natural light provided to the bed bays".
