Appeal following fatal collision on the M25

Officers are appealing for witnesses, information and dash cam footage following a fatal collision on the M25 after a man in his twenties was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following a police chase.

The incident occurred on Sunday, February 4, taking place between junctions 22 (London Colney) and 21A (North Orbital Road/St Albans) at around 4am during a police chase that has seen Hertfordshire Constabulary investigated for their actions in the lead up to the fatalities.

Four vehicles were involved – a white Citroen Dispatch van that was being pursued by police, as well as a silver DFSK 580 Glory, a silver Skoda Superb and a black Peugeot 5008.

One of the two victims, Zoe Hawes was travelling to go on holiday to celebrate her 40th birthday when the tragic incident occurred. Zoe's husband, Wayne, remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

In a tribute, Zoe's family said:: "Zoe was the heart of our blended family.

"She was a role model to everyone and the centre of our family. She was a very much loved mum, step mum, sister, aunt and lovely young nanna. She was a friend to many.

"She was very much looking to go on holiday to celebrate her 40th with her husband.

"Sadly a holiday and birthday she didn't get to celebrate. We are all trying to pull together as a family and are devastated to lose Zoe in this tragic way.

"We wouldn't have changed her for the world and she leaves an enormous hole in our family that will never be filled.

"We love you and will miss you forever."

Herts Police investigated

Herts Police said: "Two people sadly died and their families are being supported by specially trained officers."

As Nub News has been reporting (see our articles on this tragic story below) officers in a marked vehicle had been in pursuit of the van shortly before the collision.

Police insisted: "The pursuit was quickly abandoned as the officers assessed that the risk of continuing was too high."

The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct who are now investigating, while Essex Police are conducting a criminal investigation into the collision.

Detective Inspector Mark Fraser said: "Our thoughts are with the loved ones of those who lost their lives in this collision.

"I am appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to get in touch.

"Did you see what happened or the events leading up to the collision? Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you can help.

"I also want to ask any dashcam owners who were driving in the area to check it and get in touch if you spot something that might help us.

"You can email me at [email protected]."

Call the non-emergency number 101, quoting Op Sericeous if you have any information about this tragic incident.
