Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service's specialist fire investigation dog has been named as a finalist in a national awards ceremony.

Loki, who works alongside handler Nikki Harvey, has been shortlisted for the Emergency Services Dog Medal of Honour at the UK Service Dogs Awards 2026.

The award recognises his contribution to fire investigation and public safety across Hertfordshire and further afield.

Loki is one of only a small number of specialist fire investigation dogs in the UK trained to detect ignitable liquids.

His skills allow him to identify tiny traces of substances which may have been used to start a fire, helping investigators establish causes and gather evidence in suspected arson cases.

Loki joined Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service in 2022 and has since assisted with more than 300 fire investigations.

His deployments have included a major blaze which destroyed 40 industrial units, a fatal explosion which claimed two lives and a murder investigation where evidence identified by Loki helped support the offender's conviction.

More recently, Loki was deployed following a major fire at a soft play centre, where he helped locate the only surviving animal following the blaze.

Nikki Harvey, Fire Investigation Officer and Loki's handler, said: "We're incredibly proud that Loki has been recognised as a finalist.

"His dedication, intelligence and ability to work in challenging environments make him an invaluable member of the team.

"His work is vital in helping us uncover evidence that supports our investigations and helps keep communities safe."

The awards are organised by Service Dogs UK and the National Foundation of Retired Service Animals and recognise service dogs and handlers working across areas including the emergency services, military, assistance and therapy roles.

Event organisers said Loki's selection from a large number of nominations was a "tremendous achievement", highlighting the contribution service dogs make across the UK.

Loki works with Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service's Fire Investigation Team and can also support investigations elsewhere in the country.

The winners of the UK Service Dogs Awards will be announced at the UK Service Dogs Conference & Awards on October 1.
