Work is continuing on long-awaited improvements to Hitchin's Riverside Walk between Bridge Street and Biggin Lane, with North Herts Council confirming that the project remains a local priority.

An outline proposal for the upgraded walkway has now been prepared by an external firm of consultant engineers. Before designs are finalised, the council's legal department, along with the highways and environment agencies, will need to provide input — followed by a public consultation phase.

A key feature of the plans is a proposed new bridge across the river at the Biggin Lane end, which would improve access and make the popular walking route safer and more accessible for residents and visitors alike.

As part of early preparation, the river and its banks were cleaned over the summer to allow engineers to inspect the retaining walls. Repairs have also been carried out on sections of paving to remove uneven surfaces ahead of reopening the path safely.

A North Herts Council statement said the authority is committed to restoring and improving the Riverside Walk as "a valued green corridor through the town centre," linking key areas of Hitchin for walking, leisure and nature.
