Police have urged young people to stop climbing onto buildings in Hitchin town centre following reports of criminal damage and objects being thrown onto pavements.

North Herts Police said it had received several reports of young people entering buildings and moving across rooftops.

Officers warned that the activity placed both those involved and members of the public at risk of serious injury.

Police said: "Not only is this extremely dangerous, but we have also received reports of criminal damage being caused and items being thrown from rooftops onto the pavements below, putting members of the public at risk of serious injury."

Local schools have been contacted and asked to alert pupils and parents to the dangers and potential consequences.

Parents and carers are also being encouraged to speak to their children to help prevent further incidents during the summer holidays.

Police warned that abandoned buildings can contain unstable floors and staircases, broken glass, sharp metal, exposed electrical wiring and hazardous materials such as asbestos.

There is also a risk of people becoming trapped inside confined or unsecured areas, while ageing roofs and other structures may collapse without warning.

Officers added: "If you are involved in this activity, stop now. Climbing on buildings and entering disused premises can place you at serious risk of injury or worse."

Anyone found committing offences, including causing criminal damage or breaking into vacant buildings, will be dealt with accordingly.

Additional police patrols will take place in Hitchin town centre during the summer holidays to identify and tackle anti-social behaviour.

North Herts Police said: "We want everyone to enjoy their summer safely and respectfully. Please help us keep Hitchin a safe place for everyone."
