Residents mark VE Day with sweet treats, Shared Memories and patriotic fun at Milford Lodge Care Home.
By Eliana Ferraris 8th May 2026
Residents at Milford Lodge came together for a joyful and heartfelt VE Day celebration, honouring the end of the Second World War with themed activities, nostalgic conversations, and a vibrant street‑party‑style spread that brought the home to life with colour and community spirit.
The home was decorated in red, white and blue, with bunting, flags and table displays that created a festive, patriotic atmosphere. For many residents, the day held deep personal meaning — especially those who were children or teenagers in 1945 and still remember the relief, excitement and hope that swept the nation on Victory in Europe Day.
A Street Party Table Full of Sweet Treats
The centrepiece of the morning was a street‑party‑inspired table, overflowing with sweet treats reminiscent of post‑war celebrations. Residents enjoyed themed cupcakes, biscuits, and classic favourites, sparking conversations about rationing, family gatherings and the long‑awaited return of peace.
Many paused to admire the cupcakes decorated with miniature flags and wartime motifs, each one crafted to honour the era.
Patriotic Puzzles and a Friendly Quiz
To keep minds buzzing, residents took part in a VE Day wordsearch, filled with words like "victory," "allies," "peace" and "celebration." Small groups worked together, sharing stories as they circled each word.
This was followed by a lively VE Day quiz, where residents tested their knowledge of wartime songs, historical moments and life on the Home Front. Laughter filled the room as teams debated answers and reminisced about the music, fashion and community spirit of the 1940s.
Memories from Those Who Lived Through It
One of the most touching parts of the morning came as residents who were old enough to remember VE Day shared their personal recollections. Some spoke of street parties that stretched down entire roads, others remembered listening to Churchill's speech on the radio, and many recalled the overwhelming sense of relief that the war in Europe was finally over.
"I was only a teenager, but I remember the cheering in the streets," one resident said. "Everyone came together — it felt like the whole country was celebrating as one."
These stories brought history to life for younger residents, staff and visitors, creating a powerful moment of reflection and connection across generations.
A Day of Remembrance, Joy and Togetherness
The Engagement team Eliana Ferraris & Devina Kutowaroo said the event was designed to honour the past while giving residents a chance to celebrate in a way that felt meaningful and uplifting. The combination of sweet treats, themed activities and shared memories created a warm, communal atmosphere that perfectly captured the spirit of VE Day.
The team at Milford Lodge look forward to continuing to mark important historical moments throughout the year, ensuring residents can celebrate, reminisce and enjoy time together.
