Hertfordshire Police urges Hitchin residents to keep homes and gardens secure this summer
By James Denselow 8th May 2026
Residents across Hitchin and North Herts are being reminded to take extra care securing their homes and gardens as warmer weather and summer holidays can create more opportunities for burglars.
Hertfordshire Constabulary has issued seasonal advice encouraging people to lock doors, windows and outbuildings, particularly when spending long periods outdoors or heading away on day trips and holidays.
Police say burglars often target homes where windows are left open, doors unlocked or valuable items such as bikes, tools and garden equipment are left unsecured in sheds or gardens.
Detective Superintendent Ant Alcock from the Local Policing Command said: "Many people are out enjoying the weather at this time of year, either in their gardens or perhaps leaving homes empty for days or weeks at a time.
"Burglars will target homes if windows are left open or doors unlocked, as well as outbuildings, which tend to have less security than homes, but can still contain valuable items."
He also encouraged residents to secure ladders, tools and gardening equipment which could help offenders gain access to properties.
Police are advising homeowners to consider installing doorbell cameras, external lighting and strong locks on sheds and gates. Residents are also encouraged to keep fences in good repair and avoid leaving valuables visible through windows.
Among the key tips shared by officers are:
- Lock all windows, doors and outbuildings
- Use timer switches for lights when away from home
- Ask neighbours to move bins or collect post while you are away
- Store bikes securely and consider security marking them
- Keep wheelie bins secured so they cannot be used to climb into gardens
Police also reminded residents that most bicycles are stolen from homes and recommended registering bikes through BikeRegister
