Every Wednesday evening at St. Andrews Primary School in Hitchin, people come together from across the generations who all have one thing in common - singing brings them joy!

This is the Hitchin branch of The Collaboration Choir run by Choir Director Rachel Hill - a nationwide pop-choir which is open to all, no experience needed.

"We all start singing because we love it and it makes us feel good. Helping people rediscover that joy and see their confidence blossom is a true privilege." says Rachel.

Rachel is an award-winning singer-songwriter picked up by BBC Introducing and trained as a classical soprano at Cambridge University. After graduating during the pandemic and finding herself unable to follow a music career at the time, she worked as a care worker, earning the affectionate nickname "the singing carer" for bringing joy to others through her singing.

"Being a Choir Director for The Collaboration Choir has reconnected me with the 'why' behind my music career." she explains.

With a natural warmth, Rachel has built a real reputation locally for creating a space where people can express their creativity and genuinely surprise themselves. The aim is simple: give people permission to stop worrying and start singing.

As Rachel says "There's something to be said for leaving the seriousness of life at the door and grasping the energy and the passion that got you there in the first place."

And community singing is not just personally enriching but a force for good too. Just last month, members from Rachel's Hitchin Choir took part in pop-up choir performances across Hertfordshire to support local charities. The Collaboration Choir has raised £57,000 for charitable causes to date and there are opportunities throughout the year to sing and have fun, all for a good cause.
