Standalone Farm has long been a favourite family attraction in Letchworth – and under Farm Manager Mark's stewardship since July 2023, the site is thriving with record-breaking visitor numbers, ambitious plans, and new experiences for all ages.
Mark, who comes from a non-farming background, heads up a team of five staff on site, supported by up to 20 seasonal colleagues. He says most visitors come from within a 5–10-mile radius, particularly along the A1 corridor, with families from Biggleswade proving a key audience.
"We've just recorded close to 110,000 visits this year – the busiest ever for Standalone," Mark told Hitchin Nub News. "We want to keep offering more variety and new reasons for people to return."
Life on the farm
The farm's eight horses remain central to its traditional farming demonstrations, including in the future; harness and driving work. Animals are also taken to local shows to "get out a bit more," with Mark keen to showcase farming heritage.
Standalone is developing a stronger educational programme, including events such as sheepdog and duck displays, with ambitions to build towards a full country show in the future – complete with dog shows and even a tongue-in-cheek "Standalone Crufts."
The farm's well-loved resident Mora, a Suffolk Punch Filly who has lived on site since 2024, remains a star attraction with a daily 2pm meet-and-greet.
Challenges behind the scenes

Running a working farm is not without its hurdles. Rising feed costs are a major concern, with hay yields reportedly down 70%, pushing up prices sharply. Vet bills and insurance are also significant pressures.
"Standalone is a 365-day enterprise," Mark explains. "From November to February, when we're quieter with visitors, the team is still busy with paddock work, hedge cutting, painting and general maintenance."
Looking ahead
Since 2023, Standalone has extended its opening season until the end of November, with Mondays and Tuesdays generally the quietest days to visit. A Christmas market is also planned, while future options under discussion include new indoor play facilities, high ropes and even mud runs or assault courses.
Mark is also keen to bring more farm produce on site for visitors, adding: "We want to keep evolving. Families expect more than just goats, pigs, sheep and cows – we're always looking for ways to keep it interesting, especially for children aged 9+."
The farm is now into its 11th pumpkin field season, another sign of how Standalone continues to blend tradition with fresh ideas to remain one of North Herts' most popular days out.
