St George's Day Brings Patriotic Fun to Residents at Milford Lodge Care Home

Residents at Milford Lodge in Hitchin enjoyed a lively and heart‑warming St George's Day celebration, complete with themed cupcakes, a patriotic wordsearch, and a friendly quiz that sparked plenty of laughter and conversation.

The home was decorated in a cheerful splash of red and white, setting the scene for an afternoon that blended tradition, creativity, and a touch of friendly competition. Staff and residents gathered together to honour England's patron saint in true community spirit.

Sweet Treats with a St George's Twist

The celebration began with a delicious selection of St George's Day cupcakes made by Activity Coordinator Devina Kutowaroo, each topped with miniature flags, red‑and‑white icing, and edible dragon faces. Residents enjoyed choosing their favourite designs, and many commented on how the themed treats brought back memories of past celebrations and school fêtes.

A Wordsearch to Get Minds Buzzing

Next came a specially designed St George's Day wordsearch, filled with themed words such as "dragon," "knight," "England," and "courage." Residents worked together in small groups, helping one another spot the trickier hidden words. The activity sparked conversations about childhood stories, favourite legends, and the symbolism of St George.

The morning rounded off with a light‑hearted St George's Day quiz, where residents tested their knowledge of English history, folklore, and national traditions. There were plenty of smiles as teams debated answers, shared fun facts, and celebrated each correct guess. The quiz champion was crowned with a playful paper laurel wreath, much to everyone's delight.

A Celebration of Community and Tradition

Engagement Lead Eliana Ferraris said the event was designed to bring residents together through shared memories and gentle mental stimulation — and it certainly succeeded. The room was filled with chatter, laughter, and a strong sense of togetherness.

"It's lovely to celebrate days like this," one resident shared. "It reminds us of the stories we grew up with and gives us something fun to enjoy together."

The Engagement Team at Milford Lodge look forward to many more themed events throughout the year, continuing to create joyful moments that bring residents, staff, and families closer.
