Three new exhibitions by bursary-winning artists to open at Broadway Gallery in Letchworth
By James Denselow 23rd Apr 2026
Art lovers in Hitchin and North Herts are being invited to explore three new exhibitions opening this spring at Broadway Gallery.
The gallery will showcase work from three bursary-winning artists as part of the Letchworth Open Bursaries 2025 programme, which helps artists develop and present new projects while connecting local audiences with contemporary art.
Opening on Friday 24 April, the exhibitions feature Callum Abbott, Malcolm Barrett and Talia Giles, each bringing their own distinctive style and perspective.
The artists were chosen from more than 450 submissions to the fourth edition of the Letchworth Open Exhibition. Each received a £1,200 bursary to create new work through the scheme.
Among the new exhibitions is Grunt by Callum Abbott, a series of energetic abstract drawings created spontaneously without a fixed plan. The work uses bold shapes, repeated patterns and unexpected materials.
Malcolm Barrett's City of Dreams: Aqua – Matters of Time reflects on Letchworth's heritage through the landscapes of Pix Brook and the Icknield Way. Using walking, drawing, print and film, the exhibition explores how these spaces have shaped the town and how they are changing over time.
Talia Giles presents Memories Weigh Heavy, an intimate collection of drawings made during a period of personal change while living in temporary spaces. Her layered interiors focus on memory, resilience and everyday life.
Alongside the exhibitions, each artist will lead workshops and classes at the gallery, open to all abilities. Places are limited and must be booked in advance.
Paul Davey, Arts Officer, said: "The Letchworth Open Bursary exhibitions are a fantastic opportunity to support three exceptionally talented artists. Their work is already making a significant impact in our region, and we hope their achievements will inspire others to participate in the 2026 Letchworth Open."
The exhibitions run from Friday 24 April to Saturday 30 May 2026. Entry is free.
Broadway Gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.
