Stevenage boss Steve Evans has been dreaming of a packed Broadhall Hall hosting a Premier League big boy in Chelsea or Spurs, as the draw for Carabao Cup second round looms
Stevenage boss Steve Evans has welcomed the potential prospect of a sold-out Lamex Stadium hosting a Premier League team as reward for knocking out Championship side Watford.
Evans Boro showed great character to come from behind to test Valerien Ismael's Hornets throughout a pulsating 90 minutes - or a total of 106 minutes if you include all the added time following the controversial new FIFA directives.
Nathan Thompson scored the winning penalty for Stevenage after a dramatic penalty shootout.
Jamie Reid fired over with the hosts' first penalty but Jordan Roberts, Forster-Caskey and Alex MacDonald all converted their kicks before Thompson sealed victory - prompting jubilant scenes at the Lamex in front of 4,495 fans.
Earlier, Hornets No19 Valium Bayo slotted home from close range to put the visitors ahead after only six minutes, as their 1,373 travelling fans celebrated at the other end of Broadhall Way.
That was prior to Boro's Josh March netting from close range to make the score 1-1 on 42 minutes.
Speaking to Nub News after the match, a delighted Evans said: "It would be an honour to host a Premier League team such as Chelsea or Spurs.
Magnanimous Evans also took the time to praise the visitors, saying: "I am so proud of my team - but I also have to pay tribute to an excellent Watford side who showed us respect on and off the field tonight.
Evans added: "Of course it would be nice to play a big team - but there are many, many teams in the draw.
"I'm looking forward to finding out who we play."
Unlike Premier League giants Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle - who all join the Carabao Cup in the third round, due to their Champions League commitments, Spurs and Chelsea failed to qualify for Europe last season, and by default will play in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
