Stevenage FC have been drawn to play Portsmouth in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The tie will take place at The Lamex on the weekend of September 6 with full details to follow in due course.

For a long time this summer it appeared that Boro would not be allowed to play in this season's competition after finishing bottom of the fourth tier when the season was halted because of the Covid crisis.

However, Alex Revell's side were granted a reprieve when a points deduction saw Macclesfield relegated to the National League instead of the side located near to Hitchin.

The first competitive meeting between the sides came at this stage of the competition a decade ago in August 2010.

Pompey won 2-1, with Nadir Ciftci and Michael Brown notching goals for Steve Cotterill's side.

The side from the south coast reached the third round of last season's Carabao Cup, while Boro fell at the first hurdle.

Paul Merson conducted Tuesday's draw, which was shown live on Sky Sports News.
