Victorious Stotfold FC boss Brett Donnelly full of praise for his side after Senior Trophy triumph: 'Now for the league' he thunders
Now for the league!
Stotfold manager Brett Donnelly picked up his first silverware at the club in his maiden season with the Ambers with a 4-0 win over league rivals Shefford Town & Campton on Wednesday night - but wants to cap a memorable campaign with the league title.
First half goals from Ashley Kersey, Codi-Lee Spavins and Kade Bagge put the league leaders in firm control of the final before substitute Luke Smith sealed the deal with a penalty in the final minute of stoppage time.
Donnelly told Nub News that he hoped it would be the first trophy of many in his Stotfold tenure, saying that the cup victory "sets us up nicely for the league over the next couple of weeks".
Full focus will be on achieving promotion to Step 5 as champions of SSML Division 1, and with Stotfold 10 points clear of second-placed Winslow United they are on a good course to do so. "Everything was on us to win it because we are top of the league, we are apparently the 'big fish' and the pressure was on", but Stotfold lived up to the occasion and were deserved winners.
581 fans enjoyed the final despite incredibly windy and cold conditions, something Stotfold players know all too well- "we're used to playing in gale force winds, but the conditions didn't make for a great game", is what Donnelly had to say.
The wind certainly played a part in their lightning-fast start to the game with Spavins proving a thorn in the side of the Shefford defence.
Donnelly though had this to say about Stotfold's young attacker: "He's been massively important for us until about two months ago- he's not been anywhere near at it recently but that shows the quality of him, he's not won a cup before too!".
He also took time to praise the players who didn't play a part on the night. "There was no whinging or moaning from the lads I left out, everyone was involved and I'm over the moon". With some players unavailable due to various reasons the scale of the win is even more impressive.
One player who did earn a mention from Donnelly was 18 year-old right back Aaron Hector, who had the tough task of keeping Brett's former teammate Johnny MacNamara quiet. "He didn't get overawed by the occasion and he marshalled [MacNamara] superbly".
The interview only lasted about two minutes with Donnelly making a quick escape to the bar to join the rest of Stotfold players, coaching staff and fans, and the trophy too…
