Stevenage were denied back-to-back league wins for the first time since May 2019 by a late Josh Gordon penalty as Walsall held Boro 1-1 on Tuesday evening.

There was late drama at the Banks's Stadium when former Leicester City striker Gordon climbed off the bench after two months out injured to prevent Alex Revell's side heading back down the M6 with all three points, with a stoppage-time penalty.

The 26-year-old Gordon - out since October with a knee injury - drove his spot-kick down the middle off the crossbar to beat Jamie Cumming and cancel out QPR loanee Aramide Oteh's earlier penalty for Boro.

Charlie Carter hit the side-netting for the visitors moments before the interval, but they eventually led through 22-year--old Oteh five minutes after the break when Emmanuel Osadebe's backpass sold Jack Rose short and the keeper felled Tom Pett.

Cumming foiled Gordon's near-post flick to keep them 1-0 in front, while Boro nearly added a second as Scott Cuthbert narrowly missed the target with a powerful header late on.

But that was before Cuthbert took Gordon's feet from under him in time added on as the forward slotted home to prevent a Boro victory.

In a tightly packed bottom half of the table, the draw sees Stevenage slump back into the relegation places.

However, with only six points separating seven sides, Boro host rock-bottom Southend at the Amex on Saturday, in front of fans for the first time in more than eight months.
