Mark Sampson has sent a message to Stevenage fans after this departure from the club on Monday afternoon.

Alex Revell's assistant left the club following a run of poor results that saw Boro slide to 21st place, two points off the relegation trapdoor.

In a statement published on his official Twitter account, the former England women's boss said: "My time at Stevenage has come to an end.

"I will always be grateful to all the players who I shared memories and learnt so much from. Thank you.

"Thankful to Stevenage supporters who in challenging times always showed incredible passion for the club.

"It was a privilege to be part of your club.

"Grateful to all the staff behind the scenes. At the stadium, academy, community and Stevenage Women. Amazing people."

The former England women's coach joined Boro as first team coach in July 2019.

The 39-year-old took over as caretaker manager after Dino Maamria was sacked in September of the same year.

However, a series of defeats including a 5-0 loss at AFC Newport prompted chairman Phill Wallace to speak of 'unacceptable' results.

While Boro's encouraging performance during the 2-2 draw in Saturday's FA Cup first round tie at Milton Keynes raised hopes of a cup run, it was not enough to save Sampson.

He added: "I would have loved nothing more than to enjoy more happy times with the club on the pitch, but I leave treasuring the memories we did make and the people I made them with.

"I wish 'Revs', the staff, the players and everyone connected with the club every success for the future.
