Stevenage spoiled the promotion party with a 1-0 win at The Abbey Stadium against Cambridge, and in the process claimed a bittersweet double over their fierce rivals.

A Luke Norris header just after the 60th minute proved to be the game winner as Boro rode an early onslaught to dominate for the majority of the match.

Alex Revell made two changes from Tuesday nights loss against Cheltenham, with Jack Aitchinson and Luther Wildin returned to the side with Joe Martin and Romeao Hutton dropping to the bench.

Cambridge made just one change from their 4-2 loss to Leyton Orient on Tuesday night with veteran Wes Hoolahan replacing Shilow Tracey.

Cambridge started the brighter of the two teams, with Joe Ironside evading two challenges before cutting the ball back for Luke Hannant who blazed over the bar.

Some nearly chances fell the U's way before Boro turned the screw.

Alex's Revell's men were utilising both wings to their advantage, and against a narrow Cambridge diamond, created overloads which nearly paid off when a ball into the box deflected of Jack Aithchinson and just fell the wrong side off the post.

Boro were now in control and a quick flurry of chances resulted in Elliot List creating an opening for himself, before losing his footing and appealing for a penalty.

Two minutes later Jack Smith was slotted through on goal at a tight angle, only for his shot to be saved by the onrushing Burton in goal.

Stevenage went into half time the happier of the two sides but ruing missed chances.

Cambrudge reverted to a 4-4-2 formation after half time to try and combat Aitchinson and Smith who were causing real issues.

This left them more open in midfield, and when Tom Pett picked up the ball in the centre of the pitch, he slotted through Smith who once again at an angle, had his shot saved by the keeper.

Boro's set pieces were causing real problems for the U's defence, and in the 62nd minute, this paid off when a Ben Coker corner was glanced on by Chris Lines then Elliot List. His shot hit the bar before the ball fell perfectly to Luke Norris who headed into the empty net to cause jubilant celebrations.

Cambridge responded to the goal with a force of attacking intent, needing that all important goal that would result in promotion.

Four substitutions late into the game were not enough for Mark Bonner's men as they fell to a third defeat in a row.

Boro seemingly only delaying the inevitable as one win from two games ensures promotion for the U's and a return to the third tier after a lengthy absence.
