A celebration of the life of a much-loved figure in our community has been announced.

Victoria Kevans, who ran The Victoria pub on Ickleford Road sadly passed away in late January, prompting an outpouring of love for the hugely-popular landlady.

Vic's wonderful leadership ensured The Vic became a focal point for many in our community.

It wasn't just the superb service, the convivial welcome, and the sense of friendship and camaraderie all who visited the Vic would experience, it was more than that. It was also Vic's tremendous commitment to helping our community that made such a difference to so many in Hitchin.

Everyone will have their own personal story of how Vic touched their lives.

Whether it be staging local events in the renovated barn or organising Street Food Monthly with others, boosting talented local musicians during the renowned Sunday Sessions slot, or open mic nights, hosting community choirs, promoting talented local crafters and their wares, while also providing a platform for fun-filled Bank Holiday events such as VicFest and The Vic's Big Weekend, (or even in this writer's experience Vic organising a couple of raucous book signings for me at the Vic that went down a storm), not to mention Christmas parties, Halloween Fright Nights and Murder Mystery evenings to name but a few popular events; as well helping to raise spirits during the Covid pandemic through a raft of worthy initiatives to keep people connected, the fact was Vic's sense of loyalty and dedication to the town of Hitchin and its residents absolutely shone through - and will forever be part of her legacy.

Vic's legacy

Vic's legacy is also her wonderful friends, family and staff - who all loved her deeply, as did so many who had the privilege of knowing such a kind-hearted person, whose word was her bond, and who worked so hard to make our town a better place.

Another legacy of course, is The Victoria public house itself.

A visit to such a renowned pub would surely paint a vivid picture of Vic, showcasing her unique qualities, a reminder of how she touched our community in so many good, positive ways.

Caring Vic imparted valuable lessons to us all, reminding us of the importance of love, family, and friendship, and how much one person can impact the lives of others.

Yet, no matter how much helpless despair we feel at her tragic passing, nor how much we feel cheated at losing someone so special in the prime of her life, such painful grief will never, ever overshadow the memory of such a selfless human being blessed with such boundless energy, and such a caring nature.

Vic's untimely death plunged many into mourning, as tributes flooded in for such a remarkable person - testament to the love and respect so many in our area had for her.

Vic's family and staff at the pub have praised well-wishers, saying: "Thank you to each and every one of you that has reached out in support since sharing the news of Victoria's passing.

"The outpour of love from the community has been hugely comforting at this difficult time."

Much-loved Vic took over as landlady in 2006, daughter to her predecessor Cilla Kevans, with the celebration of Victoria's life to be held at Holwell crematorium Thursday, February 22 at 11am.

No black attire

It is understood Vic's procession will pause outside The Victoria at roughly 1030am offering a moment for anyone who would like to say farewell.

Organisers add: "Unfortunately space at the crematorium is limited and we anticipate that many of you will want to attend, so we kindly ask for your mindfulness and cooperation to ensure nearest and dearest are prioritised with seating.

"There will be space at the back for people to stand.

"Following the service we will return to The Vic - doors open at 1pm."

Everyone welcome at Vic's Wake

Organisers say: "Everyone is welcome back to the pub to join us in celebrating and honouring Vic and give her the send of that she truly deserves.

"We politely request no flowers, but if you would like to make a donation to Vic's memorial and charity JustGiving pages, you can do so in our Instagram bio link or via the links below."
